Advantages of the MapFactor Navigator app

  • it is great for both driving and walking: trails are clearly shown
  • nice interface
  • automatic night display mode
  • the best value for required payment

Disadvantages of the MapFactor Navigator app

  • it is difficult to find certain addresses, cannot be clearly marked on the map

  • offline search does not work properly

This app has been created by MapFactor. The company is located in Prague, Czech Republic. It has been working on developing navigation software and vehicle tracking systems since 2001.

Starting 2007 the MapFactor company has got its specialization: navigation solutions for professional drivers and dispatcher – driver communication.

Its navigation software is available not only on Android and iOS, but also Windows, WinCE and Windows Phone OS.

Conclusion

Personally speaking, the app is one of the best ones because it can be used offline all over the world. I am not a professional driver, but I like hiking a lot. For hiking it is a pretty good one.

HERE WeGo Review (Updated)

here-logo

HERE WeGo is a free GPS app that makes city navigation easy whether you are driving, looking for a taxi or public transportation.

Size of the app varies with device, but it installs pretty quickly. I have a phone with the Android OS, so the size for it is 38,5 MB.

After you finish installing it, you will be asked a few questions about different additional features like “Traffic” (to know more about your location and traffic around you), “Here Improvement” (it will ask to turn GPS on).

Please, note, that this app will work if you turn your GPS on, otherwise you get a grey display (if you have not downloaded any maps yet).

Features:

  1. At the top right corner there is a button “house”: this is a a home’s shortcut way. You simply set your address and then tap the house anytime you want fast directions home. It depends on you: either you set it up or click “cancel”.
  2. At the bottom right corner there is a button of choosing on of the map’s looks: satellite, transit and traffic. To set the traffic mode you will need to download the map. Moreover, it gives you the feature to “make the traffic info to get even better.” It will give you more accurate real-time traffic updates to avoid traffic jams and get around easier.
  3. At the bottom left corner there is a green circle: it is your current location. Just click on it and it will show your real-time location.

here-we-go-view

Now let’s check the menu:here-we-go-destination

  1. At the top center you will find a search: you can type an address of your destination.

2. Right next to the search there is an icon with two arrows: click on it and it gives you an option to set from and to destinations.

3. On the left to the search there is an actual menu. It consists of:

  • Map: the actual map you are currently using.
  • Drive: it shows you your current location with a ready to drive regime. You will need to add an address to go to. I like that this app shows a speed limit, meters to the final destination and heading (in my case it is NE).

here-we-go-maps

4. Collections: you can create your personal collections of maps, however, sign in is requred first to access it.

5. Use app offline: in case of lack of the Internet, this feature is perfect. However, before using it you will need to download the map of the needed area.

6. Download maps: the app suggests to download the map of your country you are currently in. And, of course, you can download other free maps: Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North and central America, South America.

7. General settings:

  • units: metric, imperial UK, imperial US
  • storage memory:internal
  • clear history: here you delete your search and destination history
  • delete my data: you delete all your data that has been collected and stored in WeGo or other Here products, you can also send an email to app support at here dot com.

8. Navigation settings: here-we-g0-voice-optionshere-we-go-speed-alerts

  • Voice options: you can turn it off or as default use English as natural-sounding female voice. For more options click “choose voices” and select one from the available voices.
  • day/Night view: auto switch, day only, night only.
  • Speed alerts: you can turn it on or off. And there are two options: alerts if you speed over limit by: and choose from 0 to 30 km/h; and where speed limit is 80 km/h and over from 0 to 30 km/h.

9. Feedback: you can

  • give HERE WeGo a score
  • Get support
  • Report a map problem

11. Sign in: to make the app features more individual you can create your account by “signing in”.

The app is completely free. If you want, you can download all the maps at once but that will just eat all of your storage space. HERE WeGo is a great alternative to Google Maps. Its offline option works much better, offline maps work for entire countries and don’t have to be updated as often as on Google Maps. HERE WeGo offers a plethora of useful features, it is lightweight, most of its features work in a huge selection of countries, and most importantly the maps are highly detailed with accurate routes.

GPS and Science: Technology Can Predict Natural Disaster

gps-and-science

The latest scientific breakthroughs have allowed GPS technology to be used for the study of the Earth’s shape, gravity field as well as rotation. This is possible through the use of GPS stations firmly placed on the sea floor which are designed to measure the ground motion of Earth’s crustal plates over an extended period of time.

CGPS Station in the United States

The United States alone has around 1200 of the aforementioned CGPS stations in the west, as well as well as little over 25 in the central coast area. Out of those stations, a few of them have already been classified as Global Positioning System Meteorology or GPS-MET.

The most notable example of this is located in Cambria, Los Osos and Point Sal. These stations are operated by various entities such as the South California Integrated GPS network, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, as well as other groups such as Caltrans.

Using GPS for Natural Calamities

Apart from using the information gathered by the devices to monitor plate tectonic motion, it was also used for a number of other applications related to the subsidence of the San Joaquin Valley floor.

However, it was later discovered that these stations could determine the potential for flooding of a region by monitoring the amount of water vapor present in the atmosphere. This was especially applicable for North American Monsoon or atmospheric river events.

A major part of this discovery can be credited to Angelyn Moore, a scientist in Geodynamics and Space Geodesy group, based in Pasadena’s Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

With a doctoral dissertation in “time and Frequency”, she has been instrumental in coordinating an international federation of geodetic GPS agencies and data analysis for Earth science applications.

Understanding the technology

According to Angelyn Moore, the GPS positioning technique is based on the measurement of signal travel time, from the GPS satellites to the receiving CGPS stations.

This can be used to effectively estimate the geometric distance between the two. However, she also concedes that the signal may be subject to delays caused by the total electron content in the atmosphere, as well as the amount of moisture present in the troposphere.

The troposphere is regarded as the lowest layer of the atmosphere, extending up to 33,000 feet above sea level.

One important piece of data used in this process is PW, which is the amount of water vapor used to determine the level of perceptible water.

It is usually measured in inches and is used by a number of forecasters such as the National Weather Service and the Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

There is a significantly increased volume of PW data available to modern meteorologists, thanks to the rising number of GPS-Met stations that have been installed over the years.

The additional PW data is then used by National Weather Service forecasters to issue timely flash flood warnings.

Future Plans

It is a well-known fact that the atmosphere can hold more volume of water vapor as it heats up, which results in even more intense rainfall events. Flood warnings and alerts become critical at this stage.

One key area of concern for researchers are the atmospheric rivers present in the Central Coast Area, which can stretch for several thousand miles across oceans, yet being only a few hundred miles wide. They have the ability to draw vast amounts of water vapor and transport them across vast expanses in the form of a narrow band.

One estimate notes that the volume of fresh water can even exceed that of the Amazon River. Atmospheric rivers along the west coast of the United States are informally named “Pineapple Express”, which have their origins in the tropical waters near Hawaii.

Perhaps the most unprecedented case of rainfall caused by Atmospheric Rivers happened in 1995. It experienced astounding 24 hour rainfall sessions, with 8.4 inches of rain being reported from the Diablo Canyon alone. Wind speeds reached up to 70 miles per hour with gusts of 88 miles per hour in San Simeon.

Because of these winds, an enormous amount of orographic enhancement was produced, with certain hilly areas above Cambria experiencing rainfall more than 12 inches over a 24 hour period. Incidents like the ones described above are the main reason why flood warnings and alerts need to be taken seriously. The implementation of GPS technology in storm and flood warning systems could be key to get the message out at the right time in the near future.

Can Desert Bats Be Tracked By GPS? Yes!

discovery

Among the breakthroughs of modern technology and innovation, GPS remains one of the most advanced and efficient system of tracking any moving object, situated anywhere on the surface of the earth.  Besides practical uses, it has been implemented in wildlife tracking as well, something which has revolutionised the study of animal movement and their behaviour.

However, tracking small, flying creatures such as desert bats have remained largely impossible because of the technological limitations. However, recent scientific breakthroughs have broken that barrier, as a new study from the University of Helsinki indicated.  The study was focused on the behaviour of desert bats, which found that they fly further and longer to fulfil their nightly needs. This has given researchers some important information, indicating that desert bats tend to struggle during dry periods. All of this was possible due to the new generation of micro sized satellite based tags, which allow us to delve deeper into the lives of these unique flying mammals.

About the Research

According to the study, researchers have used 1 g GPS devices to study the movement of a kind of desert bat. They are the yellow-winged bats of Africa, one of two false vampire bats in the region. They have been chosen because of their size and ability to carry the aforementioned GPS tags. Sibiloi National Park, located in Northern Kenya, was chosen as the test site to conduct the study. This also includes the shores of Lake Turkana, which is infamous for being the world’s largest desert lake. A total of 29 bats were used by researchers, 14 of them for the dry season and 15 for the rainy season. They were tracked for 30 to 60 minutes every night, which has revealed some interesting insights for furthering scientific research.

PhD candidate at the University of Helsinki, Irene Connena, thinks it offers some valuable insight, something which would have been possible otherwise. According to her, “The responses exhibited by bats offer important insights into the responses of other taxonomic groups,” “These new miniaturized satellite-based tags now allow us to better understand how increased aridity affects bats foraging efficiency, leading us one step forward to understanding limits in aridity tolerance and impacts of climate change.”

Deserts around the world are getting warmer and as the warm desert creatures need to cope with even harsher conditions. “Understanding how animals cope with seasonal changes is key to understand how they might react to the challenges on the horizon. New technological devices, such as miniaturized satellite-based loggers, go a long way to help us in this task“.

GPS Tracking in the Study

As mentioned before, the study was conducted using 1 g GPS devices attached to the bat’s body. The bats, which were captured after dusk were then fitted with tracking equipment. It was attached to the bat’s partially trimmed fur by applying cyanoacrylate-based glue.

Each unit attached to a bat consisted of a rechargeable GPS logger attached to a VHF transmitter, which was mainly responsible for tag recovery after the bats drop them. Each of the tags weighed 1.45g. Some bats were recaptured to detect any changes in the bat’s weight during the tracking period, as well as checking for injuries that could’ve been caused by the tag attachment.

Other Types of GPS Tracking for Wildlife studies

GPS tracking has been used extensively by biologists, researchers as well as several conservation agencies which use them for observing fine scale movement or migratory patterns of animals. Some GPS enabled systems have high resolution tracks available, allowing researchers to control animal borne diseases such as specific strains of avian influenza.

Depending on the animal and the purpose of the tracking, GPS tracking devices for animals can come in several forms. Some of them are described in brief below:

  • Harness Attachments: Harness attachments are normally used for animals whose neck diameter exceeds that of their head, which makes fitting any collar based device, almost impossible. These are mainly used for long-necked, large birds such as the greylag goose, as well as other animals such as pigs.
  • Collar Attachments: Collar attachments are the widely used variant of GPS tracking devices for wildlife studies. They are usually used for primates, large cats, bears as well as in certain types of birds.
  • Direct Attachments: Direct attachments are used in cases where collars and harnesses cannot be used, such as for birds, reptiles and marine animals. Such devices are usually attached by glue to the animal, and are designed to automatically fall off after some time. They are usually lightweight enough and do not interfere with the animal’s ability to fly or swim.

Conclusion

GPS technology has been a breakthrough for science and technology, serving various purposes in our daily lives. Additionally it has also contributed to other fields, such as wildlife studies and scientific research. As more innovative devices are developed, the scope of GPS will only grow in the coming years.
